“That Sikh obtains much honour in the world
who earns by the sweat of his brow,
and from that, gives one-tenth to the Guru.”
~ Bhai Desa Singh,
contemporary of Guru Gobind Singh ji
A Worthy Cause
As with other Gurdwaras, Gurdwara Sahib Yishun serves as a community centre for local Sikhs, providing a place for worship, religious education, and social activities.
Donating to the Gurdwara Sahib can help support the ongoing maintenance and operation of the temple, and the programs / activities and services it provides. For example, donations fund the langar (community kitchen), which offers free meals to anyone who visits the temple, regardless of their religious or socio-economic background.
Donations may also support educational programs, such as religious study groups or kirtan classes. In addition, Gurdwara Sahib Yishun is the only Gurdwara in Singapore that stands on land leased from the Government and as such, funds have to be put aside for lease renewal.
Many people choose to donate to religious institutions as a way to support their faith and give back to their community. Donating to a Gurdwara can also be seen as a way to honour loved ones or seek blessings for oneself or one’s family.
If you contribute Dasvandh (ie. one-tenth of your income), donating to a Gurdwara would be a good place to contribute.
