The Sikh community around the world observes Avtar Purab, the birth anniversary, of their eighth Guru, Shri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji, with great reverence and joy. Born on July 7, 1656, Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji graced humanity with his divine presence for a brief period but left an everlasting impact on Sikhism through his teachings and compassionate deeds. This auspicious occasion is an opportunity to reflect on his life, teachings, and the profound legacy he left behind.

Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji was the youngest Guru in Sikh history, assuming the spiritual leadership at the tender age of five, following the footsteps of his father, Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji. Despite his young age, he displayed remarkable wisdom, spiritual insight, and boundless compassion, which earned him the title "Bala Pritam" or the beloved child.

During his brief Guruship, Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji traveled extensively and selflessly served the suffering and needy. His main objective was to bring solace and uplift the spirits of the people. He fearlessly offered spiritual guidance and performed numerous miraculous healings, affirming his divine authority and connection with the Almighty.

One of the most notable incidents that exemplify Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji's compassion occurred during the smallpox epidemic in Delhi in 1664. Despite the risks, Guru Ji fearlessly entered the city and selflessly attended to the afflicted, comforting and healing them. His divine touch miraculously cured many, instilling hope and faith in the hearts of the suffering masses. This act of selflessness and courage in the face of adversity has forever endeared him to the Sikh community and serves as an inspiration for generations to come.

Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji's teachings emphasized the importance of selfless service, humility, and devotion to the Almighty. His profound spiritual insights, despite his young age, left a profound impact on his followers and continue to guide millions today. He emphasized the oneness of all humankind, irrespective of caste, creed, or gender, promoting equality and social harmony.

On the occasion of Avtar Purab, Sikhs congregate in gurdwaras (Sikh temples) to engage in kirtan (devotional singing), ardas (prayer), and listen to kathas (narratives) that highlight the life and teachings of Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji. The celebration is marked by a spirit of devotion, unity, and selfless service, reflecting the Guru's teachings.
